DID YOU MISS ONE OF OUR EXHIBITIONS HERE IS THE CHANCE TO CATCH THEM ALL.

Summer Breeze 2009, Group Exhibition, Installation View at CCA,Lagos
Over the past 18months the Centre for Contemporary Art,Lagos has presented some of the most innovative and provocative exhibitions to date. The subject matters and themes have included freedom, human rights, slavery and governance through its inaugural project ‘Democrazy’ which took cultural icon, political activist and musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti as point of departure to present three solo exhibitions by Ghariokwu Lemi, Ndidi Dike and George Osodi. We also presented our first international and local collaboration – with Dutch organisation NCDO and YabaTech’s Yusuf Grillo Gallery with ‘Picha:African comics’ presenting the works of over 19 artists from 15 African countries. 2008 started with an inter-continental and daring exhibition of two emerging female artists, Nigerian Lucy Azubuike, and South African photographer Zanele Muholi. The well received exhibition challenged preconceived notions of womanhood, sexuality and the body within an African context, boldly articulating ideas of the female identity. This was followed by a conceptual exploration of ideas of cartography through the work of 10 international artists including Nigerian artist Krydz Ikwuemesi. The World is Flat was a
project by Danish curator Johanne Loegstrup presented to a Lagos audience in collaboration with CCA,Lagos.

‘Summer Breeze’ now ongoing brings together a selection of works from our past programmes. In addition we add a new element through the introduction of the work of a recent graduate and an emerging artist Richardson Ovbiebo. Ovbiebo graduated in 2007 from Yaba College of Technology majoring in Sculpture. From 2008 until 2009 he completed his National Youth Service (NYSC) in the north of Nigeria among the Marghi people. During his 10 month visit he observed his new environment and surveyed the landscape and continued with his research. One thing he noticed was the multitude of bicycles – the primary means of transportation in this rural village – that after extensive use had been abandoned forming the main source of waste. Inspired by his readings of the conceptual experimentations of Duchamp and the works of artist Olu Amoda he began to appropriate and decontextualise these abandoned objects to create new forms and meanings. CCA,Lagos is pleased to present two of his sculptural adaptations using discarded bicycles and tomato tins, Keke and Torch Bearer as an introductory presentation within the overall programming.

Artists in the exhibition include Ghariokwu Lemi, Ndidi Dike, George Osodi, Lucy Azubuike, Krydz Ikwuemesi, Lasse Lau and Richardson Ovbiebo.

Organised by Bisi Silva and Jude An
